Temporary Learning Centre for Nga Pone Gyi Village, Sittwe
Nga Pone Gyi IDP host village is located in Sittwe township – Rakhine state – Myanmar.
The total population is 2050 persons, 350 House Holds. One of the main challenges faced by the community in this village is education facilities and teachers availability: the learning space was too small for the 229 students registered from 1st to 5th grade. Consequently, this matter really affect the teaching-learning process.
In response to this constraint, the community has requested MA-UK Myanmar to support the construction on March 2017.
MA-UK constructed one unit of TLS (Temporary Learning School with facilities and toilet. We used participative and community based approach methodology to include the community in the process. The building was completed by May 2017.
The TLS will be hosting 135 male, 94 female students from 1st to 5th grades.
Our community based approach proved to work. We encouraged and welcomed the community to participate. In the process, we received willing help from them and we were able to empower the community in return. We mainly purchased equipments and construction materials from local or nearby shops/suppliers as well as employing villagers. Working in close collaboration with local community rather than contractors has slightly required more effort, understanding and passion. However, there are a lot of things could be learned from the process such as the local culture, employment mechanism, procurement process and the role of the leaders through the entire construction work. The most important factors from this process is strengthening their feeling of ownership and accountability.
